As the Tohoku Shinkansen's Hayabusa No. 60 train pulled out of Shin-Amori station, bound for Tokyo, Conductor Takaichi greeted the passengers with his usual warm smile. The caller, demanding a staggering 100 billion yen ransom to disable the device, hung up before anyone could respond.
